On this site you will find lots of information about North Africa. There are lots of links to wildlife, the environment, conservation, the Sahara and her people, as well as our tours in North Africa, and travelling generally.

A BRIEF HISTORY

In 1999 Desert Fox Overland was created to serve the needs of the growing number of people who are principally concerned with diseminating the fascinating world of the Sahara to the wider public.

As a company we support a variety of conservation and environmental projects, and as a business we also offer specialist tours to the Sahara that have an environmental bias, an historical bias or an archaeological bias. Within the broader boundaries of these three, there is much opportunity to explore what the desert has to offer, and in many different ways too.

A GENERAL INTRODUCTION

North Africa and the Sahara, whilst considered by some, to be marginal, offers much to the discerning traveller in terms of special interests, like wildlife photography, or painting and drawing.  Trekking by a combination of 4x4, camel, & walking enables us to visit the strangely atmospheric Roman ruins in Northern Libya, oases & fabulous dunes, ancient medinas, colourful souks and the wonderful paradises of at least two garden of edens; the Ubaria Sand Sea and Lakes and the Waw Namus Crater Lakes.

We visit the arresting magically enchanting sites of the Tassili-n-Ajjer and the sheer splendour of the Adrar Ahnet mountain range with its incredible secret world of gorges and wadis.

Most tours collect from regional and international airports by prior arrangement in Algeria and Libya as well as those joining our tours in Tunisia.

The tours offered are generally centred around small groups of people with no more than 8-10 individuals per tour, including our guides and escorts. More details on the tours we offer will be found under the respective links below.

Our tours  include Algeria, Tunisia, Libya & Mali, soon Chad and hopefully Niger, Sudan and Ethiopia and in the near future.

For our Special-interest tours - Algeria: Adrar Ahnet; Tassili-south, Libya: Museums, Souks & Oases; Idehen Murzuq.

For our Exploratory tours - Algeria: Fadnoun Plateau & Environs. Libya: Wadi Aramat Environs; Jabals Akakus & Tadrart.

All of the costs (airport pick-ups, fuel, food, water, camping, agencies for our paperwork, guides, drivers, escorts etc) are included in the trip. All other costs that may be applicable will be stated clearly on our tour brochures.

A tour is generally 16-21 days (inclusive of weekends) unless otherwise stated & can be extended depending on participants' available time, or/and by the nature of the tour itself.

There are no single supplements on our special-interest or our exploratory tours. Group bookings will always be accommodated if at all possible. The one exception are our pioneering and research expeditions, geared up for the more serious study of the Sahara; additional costs may well be incurred due to the nature of these projects, but discounts can still be offered.  These expeditions are the most challenging and extreme.

We gladly tailor-make our special-interest tours to suit, and will happily negotiate specialised itineries and discounts for groups of three or more.

Our research itineries can sometimes be supported by renowned North African & Near & Middle East Archaeology research establishments, schools, univerisities and trusts in the UK, currently from the Universities of Bristol, Cambridge, Oxford, UCL and the Bradshaw Foundation to name a few.  More links to universities and relevant departments/faculties will appear here.

As we consider ourselves a specialist company, we have a network of expert contacts and infrastructure so you can be rest-assured that we can call upon the combined experiences of the best guides and advisors in Europe and the Sahara to cater to your diverse needs.
