Northern Ahaggar Landscape & Prehistory

We collect from TAMANRHASSET International Airport. In Tamanrhasset there is a campsite and a hotel, and we can also restock our supplies and refuel.

After a night in TAMANRASSET we will explore the area for prehistoric rock art and visit the Hermitage of Charles de Foucauld overlooking the pass in ASSEKREM, the Grand Canyon of the Sahara. There is a simple chapel at the hermitage and a library where Foucauld's transcriptions of the Tuareg Tamashek language are on display, other religious pieces and a visitor's book recording a list of pilgrims from all over the world.  The 'Sisters of Jesus', a small Christian devotional sect have their base here.

We then explore north and east of TAM for prehistoric rock art sites, and spend some time exploring the TEFFEDEST range and visiting GARET EL DJENOUN the sacred mountain of the Tuareg.

We will spend up to 3 weeks exploring thoroughly the area around Tamanrhasset and in the Ahoggar National Park, 'wild' camping for up to three weeks, before returning to TAM for our flights.
