ALGERIA: ADRAR AHNET & IMMIDIR, SPRING AND AUTUMN 2008 - 16 DAYS

SAMPLE ROUTE

We will begin our tour of the Adrar-n-Ahnet from Tamanghasset. There are frequent flights to Tamanghasset from other places in Algeria

On pickup from TAMANRASSET we will spend a night in TAM, visit the hermitage and small chapel of Charles de Foucauld. We will then detour at IN AMGUEL after refueling and adding to our supplies and take the turning to Horhafok and Mertouek to visit some rock engravings.

We will refuel and add to our supplies at IN ECKER then leave the road to explore the beautiful Tefferdest mountain ranges to their northern tip, where the turrets of the mysterious mountain Garet El Djenoun, the 'Mountain of the Ghosts' rise.  According to ancient Tuareg legends, the Mountain of the Ghosts, is haunted.

After visiting the Garet El Djenoun we will leave the impressive Teffedest and continue northwest to the granite domes of Tesnou. From here we enter the hidden chasms of the Tassili Immidir were we will spend some time on the plateau, about 8 days altogether. Estimated distance: 650km. This land is called the Tanezrouft ("The Land of Thirst") desert, and we will be crossing just one small part of it.

The IMMIDIR and ADRAR-N-AHNET are both incredible place to visit and discover prehistoric artefacts and rock art amongst a great diversity of landforms: harsh mountains, lovely dunes, and the soaring Tassili chimneys.

We will then visit the abandoned oasis and fort of TADJEMOUT where we will either ‘wild’ camp for one night here or at ARAK, set in a deep gorge, where we will refuel and restock, then continue cross country to the lovely dunes of the Erg Mehejbet, where we will spend some time enjoying these atmospheric dunes. We will then leave the road to transit the ADRAR-N-AHNET range where we will explore this mountain range for up to 9 days before returning to Tam.
