PREHISTORY; ROCK ART AND CULTURE, AUTUMN 2008, SPRING 2009 - 21 DAYS

SAMPLE ROUTE

The route to the Jabals Akakus and Tadrart initially is straightforward.

After allowing half a day for the border formalities we depart from the Tunisian-Libyan Rass Ajdir border crossing and stop at Zuara for fuel (if available; there are queus likely) and supplies.

Our route takes us to Nalut where we spend our first night in Libya either camping or at a Hotel, and where we visit the Ksar (Berber Granary). Access to the Granary is through the Hotel Nalut.

Our next stop is at Ghadamis.  There is an opportunity to visit the museum at Ghadamis (providing it is open). The route from Ghadamis to Sardelles (Al Aweinat) and the Alfouar campsite will take three to four days (598 kms) through hamada and piste.

We will then camp at Sardelles for the night - here there is opportunity to leave some of our belongings as we will be returning there.  The campsite is equipped with hot & cold running water and a bistro/small restaurant, and there are Zeribahs for hire.

We will then drive the 100 km to Ghat were we will spend some time here and  refuel and take on supplies (fresh food, extra water) for the trip to Jabal Akakus.  We will explore the Jabal Akakus for about 6 days and then return to Sardelles.

From Sardelles we will drive to the Libyan-algeria border at Tin Alkoum, the border crossing between Libya and Algeria may take up to half a day, but after negotiating with the checkpoint for access we will soon be on our way to the Jabal Tadrart.

It is about 30 km (approx) from Ghat to Tin Alkoum.  The border for Niger is about 300 kms away.

In the Jabal Tadrart we will explore the massifs and wadis.  The Jabal eventually traverses the Algeria-Niger border, but we will spend up to 6 days in the Tadrart and not go further than In Ezzane.
