AUTUMN/WINTER 2008,9,10 - UP TO 16 DAYS

SAMPLE ROUTE

We will spend an afternoon in HOUMT SOUK Djerba Island, visiting the medina and the souks, and that evening at a cafe-bar/restaurant after collecting people from Djerba Airport before retiring for the night to a double- or family-roomed hotel.

The next morning we will drive to RASS AJDIR border. The coastal route is rich in birdlife, and the BOU GRARA GULF and BHIRET EL BIBANE are ideal places to watch a variety of sea life.

After we enter Libya and collecting our guide we will visit TRIPOLI and the museum, We will spend a night in Tripoli, and then head out on the coastal road to AL KHUMS and LABDAH (LEPTIS MAGNA), and MISRATAH.

We will visit the Roman ruins at SIRTE, and AS SULTAN. Here we backtrack to SIRTE and go inland to WADDAN and visit the JABAL WADDAN range, then head off to SABHA and AWBARI.

We will camp at SABHA for the night and then drive to AWBARI, the leave the road and visit the famous lakes of Maflu and Gabrun, Um el Ma and Mandara.

We will then camp at the Africa Tours campsite and then visit some more of the dozens of beautiful freshwater lakes in this area. The route in general follows gassis, or corridors and valleys.  We will have a guide especially for the lake route because there is much to see, the guides are based at Africa Tours Campsite and at Sardelles (Alfouar campsite).

At Gabrun also, there is lakeside camping. We will spend 3 full days in the Awbarai Sand Sea.  After leaving the Ubari lakes behind us we will head west, camp at the SARDELLES Alfaour campsite than take the unsurfaced earthen road to GHADAMES (3-4 days 598 kms).

We will 'wild' camp for possibly two nights depending on timing, and will then stop the night in GHADAMES (or just outside) and possibly visit the museum (if we have not done so previously) before heading to the border if it is open, or alternatively to DEHIBA border crossing, or alternatively, RASS AJDIR into Tunisia.
