ALGERIA: TASSILI; LANDSCAPE, ROCK ART & PREHISTORY, AUTUMN 2008, SPRING 2009 - 18 DAYS

SAMPLE ROUTE

We begin this tour from TAMANGHASSET.  After an overnight stop, camping (or hotel), refuel and supplies we will visit Assekrem and the Charles de Foucauld Hermitage overlooking the pass at ASSEKREM, the Grand Canyon of the Sahara.

There is a simple chapel here and a library where Foucauld’s transcriptions of the Tuareg Ttamashek language are on display, other religious pieces, and a visitor’s book recording a list of pilgrims from all over the world. The ‘Sisters of Jesus’ a small Christian community also have their home base here.

We will then drive to Mertouek for the first of the rock engravings encountered on this trip.

From Mertouek we will then traverse the southern tip of the Tefferdest and follow the Oued Irharhar course, and then join the track to Borde via Hassi Serouenout, for our journey to Djanet (via Zaouatallaz) where we camp or stay in a hotel for the night before joining our camel trek guide later for the journey to the rock art sites of Assakao, Tamrit, Tin Tazarift, Sefar and Jabbaren.  We will spend up to 10 days exploring the Tassili by camel trek.

There is an option here where we can extend the tour to visit the Jabal Tadrart (approx 500 km round trip) after leaving Djanet, by 4x4 for 5-6 days before our return to Djanet for an overnight stop, where we will also refuel and resupply for the flight home.
