TRIP COSTS
Prices from 2000 euros.
The longer trips (21 days) will generally cost more than the shorter (up to 16 days) trips.
Basic economy flights and ferries (from the UK-Europe to Tunisia, Algeria, Libya).
Meals are prepared from locally-sourced products, and there will always be a selection of fresh and dried fruits, fresh vegetables and salads, meats, mainly lamb & chicken, and some fish, and staples such as Cous-cous, Rice, Pasta, Bread & pototoes. A team effort for preparing and sharing our meals is recommended; we think it best because it makes for a far more integrated and consolidated group. Our motto is ‘sharing promotes caring’. This also has the very desirable effect of minimising costs!
WHAT’S IN
The prices are based on 2 x 4WDs travelling together ‘in convoy’ (on occasions a third vehicle will be requested for additional occupants and the price will reflect this situation).
Essential Agency fees for our desert guides, guide services, our drivers, escorts, armed escorts, 4x4/s, letters of invite, entry & exit visas, permits and all other necessary paperwork etc. Costs vary between countries, & fuel, accommodation, and distances travelled invariably effects the cost.
Vehicle Fuel (minimum 2 x 4WDs)
Food & water.
‘Wild’ camping (on piste)
Some basic campsite accommodation; basic accommodation varies, and campsites generally comprise ‘equipped’ or ‘unequipped’ (please note, some ‘equipped’ campsites will charge extra for the use of zeribahs (sleeping huts) and hot running water for showers and any additional services etc.) Recommended campsites generally include a restaurant or food bar of some description.
Some basic hotel accommodation (at the beginning and end of the tour).
Use of ONE Desert Fox Overland vehicle and one affiliated vehicle.
Desert Fox Overland endeavours to include all costs of museums, galleries and national parks within the price stipulated.
Each tour is calculated on the basis of price per person (PPP). Reductions on some tours will apply.
How the Costs are Worked Out
Of the full cost of the trip per person, participants pay a third of the cost at the outset.
This is for all essential administration; letter of invite (which confirms your booking), entrance visa, securing appropriate vehicle/s, the guide’s and driver’s expertise, vehicle ‘insurance’ & hiring vehicle ‘registration’ plates [Libya], and all other services offered by them for the duration of the tour, as well as initial fuel, food, and water.
The price also includes economy return by our recommended airlines, as well as the ferry returns for those who want the option of travelling ‘all the way’ from UK to destination (and yes, it does happen!). We will normally collect from regional airports in Tunisia, Algeria and Libya for those who wish to choose their own flights and airlines. Please indicate when booking whether you wish to make your own arrangements for flights.
The price of the tour will include, on occasions, an armed escort - a specific requirement for Niger, and possibly for Chad in the near future. This website will be kept up to date regarding developments.
The remaining costs are paid generally up to a month to 6 weeks before. We collect all our guides/escorts, the vehicle/s at start of tour.
It is recommended that substantial monies are placed in a secure account. It is NOT recommended to carry large amounts of cash in any of the vehicles or on your person; this is considered a huge liability. It is far better and much safer for us (and you!) to have paid most of the trip costs prior to setting off from our rendezvous point (ferry or aircraft terminal) then on the very day we meet our agency representatives!
WHAT’S NOT
Prices do not include:
Luxury air flights.
Extra nights in hotels/zeribahs instead of ‘wild’ camping.
Personal spending money
Additional restaurant meals.
Personal 1-2-berth ferry cabin (normally, two people sharing) for one person (unless prior arrangements have been made with Desert Fox Overland, in which case the price of the tour will reflect this).
Any additional fees payable to agency staff relating to participants’ use of an ADDITIONAL hired vehicle (full vehicle costs apply) for the personal use of clients. This has to be by prior arrangement only, and the extra price reflects this.
Some Museum &/or Gallery entrance fees, and National Park entrance fees. At the current time entry fees to classical archaeology sites and National Parks in both Algeria and Libya are being revised.
Please note:
Please bear in mind that there is a weight restriction on all our tours, especially so for the longer-haul expeditions of 18 or 21 days plus.
The agency driver and guide reserve the right to charge extra for additional baggage, or will normally refuse anything above the standard 20kilos per person that also includes ALL your toiletries. Please do not bring your own food and drink! and note, carrying and consuming alcohol is forbidden in Algeria and Libya.
Desert Fox Overland will also request any personal preferences (dietary & other) sheets so we are aware of any special dietary or health requirements.
Spending money - the amount of personal spending money is personal preference - but allow about 20 euros per person per day.
