Conferences to date, reflecting personal research, have mostly been in Europe and Africa.

Tours

In Spring 2008 I will once again be finalising a small-scale expedition to Libya.  Another is planned for later in the year, this time to the Tassili in Algeria

Groups are small with no more than 6-8 people, which includes our guide/s - small groups make for a very special experience as there are enough differences in the group for variety.  The extra costs on the tours are individual flights to regional airports in Libya and Algeria, the odd extra hotel stays that may be required, and personal spending money.

Early indications are that there are four people interested, and places are limited. Please email me your interest (INFO@DESERTFOXOVERLAND.CO.UK) or on RENATE.HAUPT@BLUEYONDER.CO.UK

if the link isn’t active, and for further details.

The tour will visit the Tadrart-Akakus in Libya, the object is to re-visit, and hopefully, discover new rock art sites in the region with a view to surveying them and entering them on a new database that will include all the rock art sites in Libya and Algeria ultimately.

Accommodation is on-piste, that is, wild-camping in the dunes and amongst the massifs. And travel a mixture of 4x4, camel and on foot. Food is prepared by all the group and the guide/s to keep costs down.

The costs (in the region of 1500 euros per person; 2-3 weeks) include all the administration for the tour, like permits, visas, and the services of a guide/s and their equipment including equipped 4x4s and camels.  It includes food, water and fuel. Camping equipment such as tents can be hired from our guide/s, but it is recommended that each person considers bringing their own 2-man, 3-season tent and their own sleeping bags.  I and my Tuareg hosts often camp out under the stars.

Desert Fox Research is a non profit-making organisation and surplus monies will go towards supporting a number of environmental organisations, trusts and charities, and to implement infrastructure for developing specialist research itineraries in the fields of Environmental Conservation, Biodiversity, Prehistory and Cultural Heritage.  It is envisaged that Desert Fox Research will soon be in a position to support a number of humanitarian causes throughout North, Sahel and sub-Sahel Africa.  Any suggestions and ideas are welcomed. Just drop me a line via email.

Here on this page you will find links to a number of sites that offer further information on the Sahara Desert.

FJ EXPEDITIONS, based in Hungary offer tours to ‘Libyan Desert’ sites, that is, the Egyptian Desert Established for years they specialise in tours to the Eastern Sahara, with southern Egypt and Northern Sudan on the agenda.  The first major Sahara trip was made to the TASSILI-N-AJJER in Algeria in 1991. Since 1999, when the business, Fliegel Jezerniczky Expeditions was established by Andras Zboray and his wife Magdi, to explore the Western Desert of Egypt, he has travelled extensively, visiting many countries, yet his heart remains in Egypt.  I travelled with him in 2001.

Other groups’ websites will appear here
