Akakus, Landscape & Prehistory

We collect from TRIPOLI (by prior arrangement) and, depending on tour, from the following regional airports in Libya; GHADAMES, GHAT, HOUN (Waddan area), MISURATA (Misratah), SEBHA (Sabha), ZWARA (Zuara) et al, and interconnecting flights from TRIPOLI, depending on tour area. Regular flights are available from Tunisia also.

From the UK flights are in the region of *251 – 400 GB£ depending on UK- or Europe-based flight providers. It is recommended that you chose your own flight to Tripoli, but we can make recommendations for you if you prefer and book your flights through us.  Our prices for flights are based on single –occupancy adult economy seats.  We always endeavour to source the best and most reliable airlines

Tunisia

For those who wish to join us from Tunisia, we will collect either from DJERBA International Airport or TUNIS International; up to a day will be spent on the mainland or on Djerba Island, where we will visit HOUMT SOUK, the medina and the souks before spending an evening at a café-bar/restaurant before returning to our hotel to retire for the night. We can allow up to two days on Djerba Island or Tunisia. The next morning we will drive through Tunisia to RASS AJDIR border.  The coastal route in Tunisia is rich in bird life, and the BOU GRARA GULF and BHIRET EL BIBANE are ideal places to watch a variety of sea life.

Libya

For the Jabal Akakus tour we will collect from SEBHA (or GHAT if available) or by prior arrangement, from TRIPOLI.  The Jabal Akakus is one of five UNESCO Cultural Heritage sites

Days 1-2

At the border (RASS AJDIR) Desert Fox will collect our escort to TRIPOLI.  For those who are joining us in Tripoli, after pickup we will spend up to two days (1-2 nights) TRIPOLI. There will be an opportunity to visit the Castle and the Museum before strolling through the old city (Medina) and visit the Souks.

Days 3-5

From Tripoli we will drive to SEBHA (via GARYAT, SHWAYRIF and BRAK) after pickup in Sebha we will camp for one night at Shwayrif. It is approx 590 kms to Sebha. From Sebha it is 452 kms to AL UWAYNAT (SARDELLES) and 552 kms to GHAT

When we arrive at the equipped Alfaour campsite in SARDELLES we will stay for up to 2 nights, where we will refuel and restock our water and food supplies before collecting our guide for the Tadrart-Akakus.

Days 6-12

We will spend 5-7 days visiting the northern Jabal Akakus range and wild-camp in and amongst the dunes and massif exploring the area. Entry to the Akakus is from the eastern side only.

Days13-14

We will drive to GHAT for fresh supplies of water, food & fuel and spend 1 night here.

Days 15-21

The morning after our stopover in Ghat, we will enter the central and southern Jabal Akakus range again the Eastern side and wild-camp in amongst the dunes and massif exploring the area

Day 22-24

After an early morning start we will drive back to Sebha, have 1 night’s stopover and continue driving northwards towards Tripoli, stopping en-route in Gariyat for 1 night.

Day 25

The tour officially ends in Sebha for those who are flying from here, or Tripoli.

Important Information

Desert Fox Overland reserves the right to alter the schedule and duration of the tour.

Libya does not as yet have a developed tourist infrastructure, therefore travellers with Desert Fox Overland are asked to be flexible and remain mindful of changes in the published itinerary with regards to the Tour schedule and/or accommodation.

The itinerary is intended as a guide only, indicating a typical itinerary and series of activities and highlights.  While our intention is to adhere to the day to day schedule as far as is practicable, the particular departures and distance travelled, driving time, activities, refuelling and restocking supplies of food and water can vary for a number of reasons – weather, road conditions, local restrictions, etc.

Overnight stops may also vary on occasions from those suggested.

Prices per person are from 1,500 Euros.  There is no single supplement and we are able to negotiate reduced costs for singles on this tour.  Included in the price are flights from the nearest Airport, transfers from airport to hotel. Included are all meals whilst wild camping (on piste), an English Speaking guide if possible and all visa fees, letter of invite etc. entrance fees (museums, national park).

Not included are personal travel and medical insurance, equipment insurance, personal expenses, sleeping bag and small 1-2 people 2-3 season tent and entrance fees to museums and national parks. Permission should be sought for photographs in museums and archaeological sites.
