Travel Advice, Cautionary Notes

Travel in North Africa is generally safe - however it is suggested that advice be sought in advance, and common sense is adhered to at all times.

Paperwork is required to travel, and valid passports and entry visas have to be obtained in advance. Once in the country it is often a choice of travellers to renew their visa from within the country they are staying in, usually this means visiting the local Gendarmerie or the Jawazat in the largest town, city or capital.

It is important to ensure all your innocculations are up to date, including ensuring the right malarial preparation have been obtained.  NOMAD TRAVEL provides information on staying healthy, innocculations, Yellow Fever etc.  Your doctor or clinic should be the first point of contact for advice.

Further information on travelling to the Sahara will appear here as and when important developments occur (this is not to say that if nothing appears here it is safe/not safe to travel! I just that I haven’t got around to doing all the necessaries).

There’ll be an updated link to all the Sahara countries here soon too.

ARAB NET (in English) provides a simple route to finding out about the countries in North Africa; click on the country flags and then on the bulletted links for your information.

I travel in the Sahara in mostly in Libya and Algeria, but with frequent incursions into Sudan and Egypt, and hopefully, soon, when it becomes safe again, to travel to Chad and Niger.

The FCO are always advising on the side of caution not to visit these countries, but mostly the risks, although they do exist, do not usually involve western people, although there is much news to the contrary.  And with the fear of terrorism that we all seem to automatically share, it is pertinent to bear in mind there will inevitably be some risk.

Good sources of information; when you open the link to REUTERS (in English) you can either click on the maps of the countries appearing under the heading of ‘Find News by Country’ or use the drop-down menu for obtaining your news.

BBC WORLDNEWS and BBC WORLD SERVICE from time to time have newsworthy articles, but one of the better news channels for Northern Africa news is ALJAZEERa (In English).

AFROL is an independent news agency dedicated to all things Africa, the group are based in Europe.
