Malta: The Skulls of the Mother Goddess
By Vittorio Di Cesare and Adriano Forgione of HERA magazine, Rome, Italy.
In the megalithic temple of Hal Saflieni, in Malta, men with extraordinary cranial volume were buried. These skulls seem to belong to a strange human stock and if properly analysed, could create an ideal link between the ancient Mesopotamian and Egyptian cultures and a race of sacerdotal men identified with the snake.
“Following the traces of an ancient story that originated from the presence of megalithic temples dedicated to the Mother Goddess on the island, a thaumaturgic figure, adored in pre-historical times of this island that was to become an important cult center”. The possibility of trying to resolve a mystery like this of interesting implications:. “It was known that until 1985 a number of skulls, found in the pre-historic Maltese temples at Taxien, Ggantja and Hal Saflieni, were exposed in the Archeological Museum in Valletta”. A few years ago (times, dates etc are not mentioned) they were apparently removed. They have for many years now been hidden from the public gaze – the explanation for this is probably to do with the nature of the skulls and their peculiarities, and so far remain unexplained. Photographs are said to exist however, they were taken by a Maltese researcher by the name of Dr. Anton Mifsud and his colleague, Dr. Charles Savona Ventura. The fact that these photographs exist and that the abnormally modified skulls may also have existed at one time remain an enigmatic testimony to their existence. Photographs however, do not necessarily ‘prove or explain their existence’ as they cannot prove that these artefacts exist unless the artefacts themselves are still in evidence and are seen by others. Since this time, two Maltese doctors have published books on these skulls, illustrating a collection of skulls that show peculiar abnormalities and/or pathologies.
From prehistory it is known that there have been skulls that had been tightly bound when the skull bones of infants are still soft; the process is known from south America From the available evidence Sometimes inexistent cranial knitting lines, abnormally developed temporal partitions, drilled and swollen occiputs as following recovered traumas, but above all, a strange, lengthened skull, bigger and more peculiar than the others, lacking of the median knitting. The presence of this evidence from the skull’s deformation can lead to a number of possible theories as to why the skulls were tightly bound.
Author’s comments:The similarity with skulls that have alledgedly (my emphasis) been found from places as far apart as Egypt and South America that exhibits this particular deformity requires analysis. As a prehistorian I am not trained in medical anatomy or forensic archaeology although I have an interest in these subjects as an archaeologist. The anomalies are unique in medical pathology, and their dates suggest a long ancestry from approximately 3000 years before Christ.
Author’s comments:There may be of course, many theories about these skulls and they range from ancient genetic mutation through to the more plausible explanation of parents or elders tightly binding the heads of infants when they are born. They are of course, an exceptional discovery, and many questions have been asked, several consider genetic mutation between different races, although this has not been substantiated in peer-reviewed journals.
